Animation Reflection

John Alan Lasseter
Born on January 12, 1957 in Hollywood California USA, his mother was an art teacher who encourages him at a young age to follow his talents. After reading about the Walt Disney Company in high school he was inspired to become an animator. Disney was in the process of setting up an animation program at CalArts, and Lasseter became the second student accepted into the program. He attended the California Institute of arts where many talent animators from Walt Disney taught. While there he created his first two short films which both won awards. After graduation in 1979 he got his first full time job as an animator at Disney and worked on a few animated Disney features. He worked for about five years with Disney. During his first experience with computer animation when working on Tron he was intrigued by the possibilities. After being too over ambitions for advancing into computer animation by his superiors he was fired in 1983.

The next year he was hired by Lucas film Ltd. he was first assigned to direct a short film.  This was the first time movies featured computer generated characters (young Sherlock stain glass solider.). In 1986 John created a standalone company known as Pixar with Steve jobs that focus mostly on deployments and sales of the animation software. Pixar made TV commercials and short films that John directed but had no big successes. In 1991 Lassertor directed Pixar first full length film and the first computer animated full length film which was a ground breaking achievement the very successful Toy Story in 1995. Earning him his second academy award, He then went on to direct Bugs life and Toy story2 both being big hits in the box office. Then co-directed and wrote Cars and produced many other Pixar films. Lasseter returned to Disney when Disney bought Pixar in 2006 and was made chief creative officer of both Pixar’s and Disney’s animation operations, and in that capacity he produced numerous features.

Where the nitemare are short animation criticism

Being one of the animator’s first animation pieces I can already see why it won an award. You can already see the deployment of John’s signature of having relatable story with everyday objects and giving them life and personality. Don’t all children remember a time when they’re in room late at night and the shadows and objects seemed to move and become monsters of all kinds.   The cute short has fun designs in characters and an interesting story line providing a very fun ending. Though nothing is in colour and everything is a pencil drawing all characters seem to be really well animated with the squish and stretch being manipulated perfectly throughout the short film.

Art Game Reflection

Not many new Technics were used however the assignment was done using flash a program I am unfamiliar with and a lot trial and error had to be used when completing the assignment. We were asked to do make a game with a meaning behind it after brain storming a bit I went with an educational Stress relief theme. I choose a class room because this is where we learn to manage stress and also causes most stress in our lives with deadlines, social problems, work that is frustrating at times and trying to keep grades up to our peers and our parent’s standards. I thought the Classroom would be the best environment to have a fun childlike feel but also hold the connection to stress. The Class room was going to the hallways at first but then I thought I would probably be easier to work with a background that had limited color choices and the black board just sounded and felt perfect.
It started out as more mental health in general but when I discovered I couldn't change what card matched with  like match a cat and dog, the matching cards had to be the same that matched I had to improvise and so I just focused on stress because that's what usually leads to or is a symptom of mental illness. If there was any influences on the appearance of the game it was the feel of elementary class rooms with different clip art pictures or less than neat hand writing.  Most of the screens in game are symmetrical like the card screen and the main screen however the winning and losing screens are a little more random. I use colors to emphasis different words and titles. I tried to have the eye be able to make its own path around each page but still pay more attention to the important areas. Over all I don't know if it works well as a whole the game works the images vary a lot and the colors are hard on the eyes at times being more harsh than helpful. I do think some of the screens work better than other like the main title has to be the best out of all the screens. I'm particularly proud of the buttons to change screens the smile faces to stars was part of the whole classroom feel I wanted to go for.
Motivation honestly I can't come up with a good motivation right now. I guess I just for the experience to "design" a game and to mess around in a new program if I had more Time I would probably have just finished early then mess around with controls or buttons I haven't pressed yet. Over all I really was kind of only halfhearted on being interested in what we were doing the idea was good making a game with meaning however the limitations limited my ability to pick a subject I liked.  The games we had to choose from was probably the biggest limitation for me.

The most successful part is problem I really like the look of the title screen and the buttons that let you navigate the game I think they work really well in the theme and look the best. I was surprised when I found such hard time finding clip art that looked good together and how hard it was to work with the cards and pick a theme. With more time I might have been able to find better images or create the images for screens however I can see no major improvements with time.

c. Choose your favourite theme from above and explain why you are most interested in
turning this into a video game.
I think I shall go with the Stress it seem like the most interesting one to work with and may lead to some interesting result and I have a better idea on what I want to do with more than the other.

d. Please write descriptions of your plans on how you will re-create the following:

Spirited Away reflection

2. Through Chihiro’s transformation from miserable little girl to courageous adventurer, the film suggests that the world of the spirits is necessary to help us live in the everyday world, that spiritual development is part of the solution to environmental crises. What do you think about this?
I think this is makes allot of sense from the perspective of various religions, many if not most spiritual community have a tie or a save the environmental message.  Native spirituality is the best example for they have such a strong tie to the environment as treat it as a gift to be shared and taken care of. Another region would be the catholic faith in which they talk about the environment being a gift from God and that we are the care takers of the earth and are responsible for the use of our resources. I think that to live day to day we must be able to let ourselves believe or think that they're are powers , things and forces that are far above our own control that keeps the world together.
5. Does it make sense to think of bodies of water as possessing spirit? Have you ever had a relationship with a river, a pond, an ocean, or the rain that prompted you to speak to water? Have you ever been rescued by a body of water? Have you ever cleaned a body of water?

Bodies of water with spirits that would make a lot of sense to me, water it's self is feels magical. Each body of water has a different personality, like the taste each town is connected to a different body of water and all have different tastes, feels and environmental life in it. Walkerton's water taste unnatural, Port Elgin's water taste clear and fresh and when swimming at the beach the water is cool and sandy, Kincardine's water is right in between the taste is not great but not bad, the beach water is clear and stony with bits of debris. Near my house is what I would label as a small stream leading into the lake it's almost thigh high in the fall and angle deep in the summer the water flows fairly fast at both times but I've never seen the stream the same every time I visit it. Most people say that water is the source of life so it is plausible that  spirit could represent a body of water.

Toy Hack Reflection

The cutest cyborg of all strawberry k-9 is a toy for all ages combing the most advanced technology of today with a child like innocence.  Soft fluffy fur and bright colours makes the dog and somewhat realistic approach to future technology. Making what might seam like a scary concept familiar and cuddly. My favorite part has to be the glowing eyes the red tinted circles looks so cool. The wheels are a cute addition they blended well and just work well. I like the Sound box too it just a fun addition. I don't like the nose for I think it doesn't blend well with the rest of the dog. I don't like how the green eye doesn't light up as well as the other. I don't like how I didn't find a way of creating a switch for the eyes. If I was to redo the assignment I might make some sort of collar for the dog. I would make a better looking nose for the dog. Lastly I would do some thing to make the other ear more tech like.

Art movie reflection

Art Movie Reflection

To create the art movie I used the given clips and some new ones from video.net then edited them using premier pro. Honestly I found coming up with a good idea in brain storming very difficult most of my ideas I didn t like or were to violent for school. Eventually I sort of gave up taking the loose idea and just messing around with the order of diffrent clips trying to get something to work. Just a lot of trials and error. In the end I settled for a basic environmently friendly message that I hope shone through the kind of jumbled mess I made. I tried but I can not say whether in complete confidence that I liked what I made and I do not think even extra time ever would save this grade.
The idea I started attempting to make was supposed to be environmental however it kind of evolved into a apocalyptic environmental message. The beginning is a sunny day filled with normal actions and lots of warm outdoor feel. Then shockingly some carelessly litters, elderly people are shocked at the young population's action however time carries on pollution and progress continues in till progress destroys society and life on earth.
The clips have been edited by blending and overlaying of other effects. Also I added some transition and filters to add a fluent flow to the project.
For this project the award was in just getting something I personally like to hand in. I didn't really like the project overall however experimenting with the program and editing old movie clips was the the best part.
My favourite part that believe is the best part are the ink flower part it just has what feels to be a very elegant flow to it that conveys just the right mood. If I had more time I most likely would have found better music or attempt to add and balance sound effects , also work on making some parts faster and other slower which I know was not done to the best of my ability. I also would of liked to use more of the old movie clips than I did use however over all for how long it took me I think the project turned out alright.

Brain Storming and clip parts

I like in dead men don't wear plaid the part when he opens the locker and looks at the list .
in metropolis I like the part when people are running out side the building and the doors of the building covered in smoke and the guy falling
in Potemkin I like the shocked face of the guy with glasses and  the people running in the streets with.

Brain storming
1 minute long vague  story with meaning
chopped up clips to look like a whole
add thing to it leave ending up to interpretation

loose story line
for my movie maybe I would like to have the spy open the locker, then may be a couple shots of buildings people running  the end of metropolis with the running, then shocked face and running from Potemkin
assassinations? use horrified faces , the man falling and the guy looking at the list maybe a flag different buildings and weapons being fired too violent

bombs too violent

maybe thinking of something more light heart

alien invasion stars above guy looks spooked,  then shocked faces and running scenes blebk not arty

how about the guy opens the locker looks like a list ( and then the bag scene)make it seem a little like they're upset about him littering. ,add the man turning the value in reverse , then the shocked face of the guy from the end of metropolis to give a feel of some thing terrible, and  the man at the end of  Potemkin angry face and shocked look of the guy with glasses
setting? buildings? people not noticing?
implication that he has done something unforgivable, possibly the people running in the streets and the horse to add outrage add plants dying

Art Movie Reflection Hero

1.       In a way the plot is not organized in a normal way, the story is retold in a different interpretation three times. The movie has a serious tone and goes slowly taking time to look at the surroundings during a fight. At the end of the story you are left to decide how all the people involved made the right and wrong choices.

2.      One way is that a lot of the shots are very beautiful backgrounds. Action pack fight scenes that are exciting and fun to watch. Also it had a story line that kept the viewer intrigued.

3.      I thought the movie was beautiful however I was not interested in any parts of the story. I really liked the use of flowing clothing and cloth in several scene they made it seem other worldly.  The natural environments were also very lovely like the golden forest and the lake. However the characters I could not connect to very well and I found little emotional connection to any of them.

4.     The color I found emphasized the most was the attack on the calligraphy school at Zhao the bright reds during the attack. I  think the color red is supposed to represent anger, lies, betrayal and false violence. Because it is later proven that most  of that version of the story told in the red color code is a lie to the king to lower his defenses.

Montage reflection

Allison Wilson
Memory in My Skin

Photoshop for Computer
February 21,2015

The main things I used during the making of the piece were the layer blends, he and saturation, brushes, transformation tools, color replacement tool, cut and paste tool, feathering, and many images from the internet. The idea was to make a piece that symbolizes an important memory, I struggled to pick a memory because each one seemed just unusable. I never found one that I really liked so in the end I just picked one. I struggled with the theme of Anime North. Not to be too obvious but I picked Toronto as the background because that is where Anime North was held.
The mask is supposed be representative of the people in costumes. The steam punk locket depicted all the awesome steam punk stuff we saw and how I totally fell for that style their. There's a compass because of the symbol of the conference is a compass pointing north. The skeleton with footprints is the reflection of the long wandering that we did. The straw hat the skeleton is wearing, well, I thought it could represent a character that was the most popular one that people dressed up as at the conference.
I put a lot of different multicolored things in the picture, like the pencil ends and stars and sparkles. The books are supposed to represent the diversity of characters at the con which are generally book characters. The fire that looks like it's burning the books is to represent the hot temperatures that day.
I tried my best to get the eye moving around but I don't think that the eye moves around the picture. The piece is asymmetrical to be unpredictable. I used emphasis on the mask by making it brighter, bigger and colorful with lines pointing to it. I tried to have the eye start at the mask and follow skeleton down to the footprints up through sparkles onto the books.  I think together the individual pieces don't work well. Together all of them are trying to be the one thing that catches your eye, expect for the footprints and they more clash than work together.
There was no other motivation; I felt absolutely no passion or emotional feel for this piece and I simply don't really like it. The only real excuse I can think in regard to it was that I enjoyed the pure experimental things to try with photoshop.
The visual idea is kind of trying to find what works with the memory; however, I guess I just couldn't find an idea that I liked to illustrate the memory. My favorite part of the piece is the book on the left-hand side. The fire on the books is burning out of the fanning book; it's one of the only elements that just worked together and has just a good flow to them. The sparkles surprised me; I didn't think that I would get so carried away with them.  And in the end they did not help at all in bringing the piece together.
With additional time I would brainstorm a little more and look for more ideas for way better inspiration. I might go through my memory box or old photos to find a better memory. Maybe I would still go through with same idea but thinking more about what I wanted to show about the memory and look at better symbols for the elements that I wanted to show.  I would just use better planning for the symbolism in the whole piece to improve the flow of the piece.

Story

Anime North 2013
We had gotten up early so as to get to the Toronto Congress Center in time to get our tickets. As we drove, I still couldn’t believe that I was getting to go to my first convention!  I was buzzing with excitement as I watched the countryside fly by and the sun rise. I was half expecting Courtney to say ‘no’ when I asked if I could go with her. She usually does things without me. As soon as we get within a couple of blocks of Anime North the atmosphere becomes apparent. You can see fans walking down the sidewalks in colorful, detailed and beautiful cosplay outfits. It was kind of magical, at least to me. It was like seeing characters walk right off the television screens or the pages of your favorite book. One saw everything from super heroes and anime characters to Doctors and various Disney princesses. They were just causally walking down the sidewalks. Courtney and I were acting like little kids, giggling and naming the characters walking by while we ignored dad’s pleas for help in trying to find a parking space.
By the time we get to the center there is already a ticket line that seems a mile long snaking out of the main doors. To our surprise, there were more cosplayers than people in casual wear. While waiting in line it just couldn’t be boring. The characters made the cold morning colorful and creative. There were all different the types of cosplay around us, from the bought to the handmade.  Some were very realistic and others were just people starting to learn how to cosplay. A few memorable ones were the female Dead Pool, the very realistic Iron Man and a couple of anime characters.   It was a cold morning, but that didn’t last long when in the Center itself the amount of humans waking around in one area brings up the temperature and just walking around artist alley was like a trek through a sauna. It was so cool to see people just stop and pose for pictures with just a polite request. Anyway, after entering the actual building and getting passes, the hard part was navigating through the sea of people to where you wanted to go.
I remember the artist alley where handmade art and prints of art were sold by fledgling artists. There were original pins, hair clips, stuffed animals and much more that were sold around this area. Next, because we were kind of lost, we found ourselves in the dealers’ room. This was the most memorable entrance as you have to get your pass checked by a convention staff as you walk by, and well, the staff was dressed as Jesus. I kid you not. He stood on a chair and checked our pass as we walked by. The dealers’ room was the biggest and busiest room. It was lined up and down with people selling everything a fan could ever want. That year there was a steam punk theme at the event so all the dealers were selling the old Victorian out fits with leather touch-ups and goggles.
One of my favorite parts was the food. They had a lot of foreign fast food like pocky, soft drinks and so many other various food types you never see in Canada. As we exited the main building to search for real food  we met an army of ice cream and fast food trucks lined up for our convenience. I had never seen so many ever before; it was like a fast food invasion.

All in all we had a great day and we vowed to return next year!  I knew that when we came the next time it would be even better than this time because we would be better organized and prepared.  I knew the next months would be worse than waiting for Christmas to arrive but I also knew that Courtney and I had work to do!!

BrainStorming

Brainstorming
Memories:public school I remember it as the first week of October it was like entering a strange and confusing world, so many people I just never seen before so many kids in one place it was strange , so many things done in strange ways, the teacher was so nice and  classmates even more so, however the rules were so strange, the kids asked me if I just moved to Kincardine and insisting against it,figuring out what a test was, getting glass, the only classroom in school with a smart board, getting to understand the world was a little bigger than I  Thoughts, and trying to figure out why school wasn't like it was on TV, rules were so weird and i did not get any of them, games that every knew (expect me) and meeting my two best friends who will guide me through the unknown
Summer with the Wilsons,it was summer I had just come back from camp mom had decided to stay home. everyone else hoped in the car and we made the longest most boring car ride up to thunder bay, my aunt Tracy and uncle Dave had just kinda finish their new cabin more like a mansion it had was big and fancy like staying it what felt like riches the bedrooms and decor just beautiful, of coarse it was not complete and the entire stay their would be hic up here and there where it was the kitchen not working or the electronics, mostly the worst part was the spiral staircase i have a fear of stairs and they put me on up stairs why? oh well  Sunny warm, belonging, discovery of family, over coming fear, books, superheroes.escape
